Bring a touch of old-world curiosity to your home with this striking reproduction of an eighteenth-century natural history illustration depicting a preserved bat displayed beneath a glass specimen jar.
Originally published in the German zoological work Die Säugthiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur, mit Beschreibungen ("Mammals Illustrated from Nature, with Descriptions"), this image reflects the scientific fascination and meticulous observation that characterised the Age of Enlightenment.
The original illustration dates to 1744 and portrays Vespertilio Spectrum (an early scientific classification of a bat species, now known as Vampyrum spectrum) rendered with remarkable detail and delicacy. Such images were created to document the natural world at a time when explorers, scholars, and collectors sought to catalogue Earth's creatures through beautifully engraved and hand-coloured plates.
This reproduction has been carefully mounted in an upcycled wooden frame with an aged finish that complements the antique character of the artwork. Perfect for for lovers of dark academia, gothic interiors, curiosity cabinets, Victorian-inspired décor, and natural history collections.
Each upcycled frame carries its own subtle character and imperfections, adding to the unique charm and vintage-inspired aesthetic of the finished piece.
